AUGUST REFLECTIONS FOR LATE SUMMER

As we enter late August, we find ourselves in a unique period in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known as "Late Summer." This season is often overlooked, but it holds significant importance as it serves as a bridge between the fiery, expansive energy of summer and the cooler, introspective energy of autumn. In TCM, this time is governed by the Earth element, which is associated with the organs of the Spleen and Stomach. These organs are central to our digestive system and are believed to play a crucial role in our overall health and well-being.

MINDFUL NOURISHMENT: During late summer, TCM emphasizes the importance of nourishing the Earth element which is linked to the spleen and stomach. This is a time to focus on mindful eating and digestion, ensuring that we are fully present during each meal. Mindful nourishment involves eating seasonally and savoring each bite to support the digestive system, which is considered the center of our physical and emotional balance. By focusing on how we nourish ourselves, we enhance our body's ability to transform food into energy, maintain a healthy digestive system, and promote overall wellness.

GROUNDED MOVEMENTS: Movement practices that ground and center the body are especially beneficial during late summer. In TCM, this is a time to focus on stability and strengthening the core, both physically and energetically. Incorporate yoga poses that engage the lower body, like Warrior poses and Tree pose, which cultivate a sense of grounding and stability. These practices not only help balance the body but also nurture a strong foundation that supports all bodily functions, aligning with the Earth element's qualities of stability and support.

QIGONG FOR DIGESTION: Late summer qigong practices focus on supporting the Earth element by promoting digestive health and emotional balance. Gentle movements that stimulate the spleen and stomach meridians, along with deep abdominal breathing, help to center the mind and body. This practice is ideal for fostering a grounded, calm state that supports overall well-being and helps to balance the transition from the high energy of summer to the more introspective fall season.
