WE’RE MAKING: ICED MATCHA

There's something so invigorating and uplifting about an ice cold glass of matcha now that it’s warm out. Matcha can be an acquired taste because of its earthy undertones (it’s a powder made from finely ground green tea leaves, afterall), but with a touch of natural sweetener, this energy boosting, antioxidant-packed drink is one of my favorite ways to start the day. Using a high-quality, ceremony grade matcha powder is key to a good cup of matcha.

MATCHA HEALTH BENEFITS:

+ ANTIOXIDANT RICH: matcha contains a potent class of antioxidants known as catechins, which help combat free radicals and reduce cell damage.

+ BOOSTS METABOLISM: matcha can enhance metabolic rates and increase fat burning during exercise.

+ ENHANCES MOOD + CONCENTRATION: the amino acid l-theanine in matcha promotes relaxation and helps improve focus.

+ SUPPORTS DETOXIFICATION: chlorophyll in matcha assists in detoxifying the body by helping to eliminate heavy metals and toxins.

+ IMPROVES CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH: regular consumption of matcha can help lower ldl cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

YIELDS 2 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS:

+ 2 teaspoons matcha - I love CAP beauty’s

+ 1/4 cup hot water (not boiling, ideally around 175°F)

+ 1-2 teaspoons of honey or maple syrup (optional)

+ 1 cup cold water

+ 1 cup ice cubes

+ 1/2 cup milk of choice (I opt for a non-dairy option)

method:

PREPARATION: Start by sifting the matcha powder into a bowl to remove any clumps. this ensures a smooth, lump-free drink. Add the hot water to the sifted matcha powder. Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) to whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion until the matcha is fully dissolved and a frothy layer forms on top.

MAKING THE MATCHA: If you prefer some sweetness, stir in honey or maple syrup while the mixture is still warm. Pour the matcha mixture into a glass. Add the cold water and stir well to combine.

FINISHING TOUCHES: Fill the glass with ice cubes and top with your preferred milk for a creamy finish. Stir gently and enjoy :)

optional mix-ins:

+ Fresh mint leaves

+ Fresh squeezed lemon juice

+ Lavender-infused simple syrup

+ Muddled strawberries

Whether you’re starting your day or taking a mid-afternoon break, iced matcha is a delicious summertime refresher sans the caffeine crash.
