NOTIONS FOR A NOURISHING NOVEMBER

As we enter November, autumn’s energy shifts further inward, inviting us to settle and reflect. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), November belongs to the Metal element, which is associated with the Lung and Large Intestine. In the rhythm of the seasons, this month encourages introspection, release, and a mindful discernment of what we truly need to carry forward.

TO PRACTICE

QIGONG FOR BETTER BREATHING Known to improve lung function, Qigong breathwork opens up lung pathways and supports immunity by deepening and expanding the breath. Try gentle movements paired with focused breathing for a centered, calming practice. Below are some links to moves we love for this.

GENTLE YOGA FLOW – Poses that open the chest and stimulate digestion, such as seated twists, bridge pose, and child’s pose, align well with the Metal element and support the lungs and large intestine. This slow flow helps release tension and deepen the breath, cultivating calm and centered energy.

WALKING MEDITATION – A brisk or meditative walk outdoors can increase circulation, improve respiration, and keep energy moving without overtaxing the system. Walking allows us to ground and appreciate the beauty of nature, which aligns perfectly with this season of release.

TO CONSUME

HYDRATING FRUITS Think of fruits like pears and apples, which can help moisturize and protect the lungs from the dryness often felt in cooler months. They’re excellent to enjoy raw or gently warmed with spices for a nourishing treat.

ROOT VEGETABLES Roasted, mashed, or added to stews, root vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, and parsnips bring grounding energy. They’re nutrient-rich and warming, supporting digestive and immune health as the days grow colder.

WARMING TEAS Herbal teas made with ingredients like ginger, goji berries, or licorice root help strengthen the lungs and warm the body. Sip these throughout the day to support respiratory health and digestion while keeping the chill at bay.

November encourages us to take a step back, acknowledge our achievements and challenges from the year, and make peace with any loose ends. Whether through journaling, setting new intentions, or simply spending more time in mindful reflection, remember that this season is about creating space for new energy as we prepare for winter.

May this month of stillness and gentle movement guide you towards balance, resilience, and a sense of grounded clarity. Take time to nourish yourself, savor the warmth of seasonal foods, and create routines that honor both body and mind as we journey deeper into autumn.
